I've noticed the battery life is much better since the update.  It is a lot better if you turn off 3G and leave it on Edge.  I only switch on the 3G or Wifi if I am hunkering down for some surfing or app downloading.

How do you set it to just use edge?

Under Settings --- Wireless Controls --- Mobile Networks --- Select Network

You can set it to 2G to save battery or 3G for better performance.  The default is automatic.

I use a widget called "Quick Settings" which has shortcuts to airplane mode, wife, bluetooth, and network.
