Motorola has sent out the test version of the 2.1 update for the Backflip to a limited group of people.  AndroidCentral posted this instruction on how to upgrade your phone.

    1) Charge your phone fully.  This could take up to 40 minutes according to AT&T, but our tipster says about 15 minutes.
    2) Grab the file right here.
    3) Copy it to the root of your SD card (not inside another folder), and make sure it stays named "Blur_Version.3.0.1390.MB300.ATT.en.US.zip."  Sometimes Windows likes to add to the file type extension, so double check.
    4) Tap the menu key > Settings > About Phone > System Updates and look for the update. Your Backflip should find it, install it, and reboot.

When you restart (this process may take a while!) you should be running Android 2.1.  Our friend also says that you may experience apps force closing, this can be fixed by uninstalling, then reinstalling.  Good Luck!

Thanks androidcentral for this update!

More info on what to expect.

From the Moto Upgrrade troubleshooting page:
2.    If unable to recognize the upgrade package

   1. It is possible that the SD card package was renamed.
          * The downloaded file must be saved exactly as it appears (do not rename the file)  "Blur_Version.3.0.1390.MB300.AT&T.en.US.zip"
          * Ensure it does not have two extensions .zip.zip
          * Misnamed due to multiple downloads- i.e, update(1).zip
   2.  The downloaded file might not be located in root folder
         1.  It must be at the top level of the MicroSD card, it cannot be in a sub-folder.
   3.  The file may have been only partially downloaded
         1. Full file size should be 92.9 MB
         2. Please ensure you delete a partially download file and follow the appropriate steps to start the process again.
   4. Another software package already on the SD Card
         1. Please ensure all software packages are deleted from the SD Card
   5.  Phone was not properly disconnected after the downloading of the file
         1. Unmount your SD Card from your computer
               1. For Windows, select the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the System Tray, then select Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device, you will see a notification stating Safe To Remove Hardware
               2. For MACs, select the Eject button in the Finder next to the SD Card Device
         2. Turn off USB Drive from device
               1. Pull down Notification Bar and select Turn off USB drive
   6. Unplug your USB cable from your phone.

Do not use an upgrade file not specifically intended for your phone.
